STREET FORMULA.

This 2019 Silverado 2500 LML came in completely stock — factory tune, factory exhaust, no lift pump, no intake. The owner uses the truck daily and pulls a boat on weekends. He wasn't chasing a big number; he wanted the truck to feel like it belonged in a different class — stronger pull off idle, better throttle response, and that characteristic LML exhaust note when you get into it.

The LML Duramax is one of the strongest starting points in diesel performance. It came from the factory with 397 HP and 765 lb-ft and a factory CP4 injection pump — on this platform, the lift pump and fuel system hardening come first, not because of a towing requirement, but because the CP4 failure risk on the LML is real and a Stage 2 tune increases fuel demand at the injection pump. The FASS 150 addresses that before the tune goes in.

The Stage 2 package on this truck was EFI Live tune, S&B cold air intake, 3-inch downpipe, and cat-back exhaust. The Allison 1000 received a transmission calibration alongside the engine tune — shift pressure, line pressure under load, and converter lockup were all adjusted to match the increased torque output. The Allison is one of the best transmission platforms in the HD segment and doesn't need a rebuild at Stage 2, but the stock calibration doesn't match well with the increased torque curve EFI Live produces.

Why EFI Live on LML, Not HP Tuners
The LML Duramax (2011–2016) is an EFI Live platform. HP Tuners gained access to the L5P (2017+) but not the LML. For this truck, EFI Live is the calibration platform — it provides full ECM and TCM access on the LML, including fuel tables, injection timing, and Allison TCM parameters. If you're building a 2017+ Silverado with the L5P, HP Tuners is the path. Platform determines the tool, not preference.

Stage 1 — Tune Only
FASS 150 lift pump first, then EFI Live tune. On the LML, we do not tune without a lift pump in place — the CP4 risk is real. Stage 1 is a tune on a protected fuel system with intake and exhaust optional. Realistic: 420–440 rwhp / 740–780 lb-ft.

Stage 3 adds upgraded injectors and a compound turbo configuration. The Allison 1000 needs a full build above 600 rwhp to survive the added torque. This is where the build cost and complexity increases significantly. Realistic: 650–800+ rwhp.

Why does the LML need a lift pump if it's not going to Stage 3 power?+
The LML Duramax runs a CP4.2 high-pressure injection pump from the factory. CP4 failures — caused by aeration and inadequate inlet pressure — are catastrophic and can send metal debris through the entire injection system. A Stage 2 tune increases fuel demand at the CP4 inlet. Without a lift pump maintaining consistent positive inlet pressure, you're tuning a vulnerable system and making it work harder. The FASS 150 addresses that before the tune goes in. The cost of the lift pump is a fraction of the cost of a CP4 failure and injection system replacement.
Does the Allison 1000 need a rebuild at Stage 2 Duramax power?+
No — the Allison 1000 is rated from the factory for the full torque output of the Duramax and has significant headroom above that. At Stage 2 (460–500 rwhp, 840–880 lb-ft), the Allison does not require a full rebuild. What it does require is a TCM recalibration to match the increased torque output — shift pressure, line pressure, and converter lockup schedule all need to be adjusted. Running a Stage 2 tune against a stock Allison calibration is how you get harshness and accelerated clutch wear. We calibrate the TCM at the same time as the engine tune.
What is the EFI Live DSP5 switch and how does the driver use it?+
EFI Live stores up to five calibration profiles in the ECM and TCM simultaneously. The DSP5 switch is a 5-position rotary dial mounted in the cab — the driver turns it to switch between profiles without a laptop or app. This truck uses position 1 for daily street driving, position 2 for towing the boat, and position 3 for an economy profile on highway runs. The ECM and TCM both load the selected profile. The switch costs less than $150 and is one of the most practical features on an EFI Live build.
Is Stage 2 enough for someone who tows a boat occasionally?+
Yes, with the right tow calibration. A Stage 2 LML producing 460–500 rwhp and 840–880 lb-ft has more than enough output for a boat trailer. The key is the tow profile — it runs a more conservative EGT ceiling and a smoother converter lockup strategy than the street profile.
