The Cooling System Matters.

A performance diesel build generates more heat than the stock cooling system was designed to handle — more fueling, more boost, more combustion heat. In Houston's summer climate, where ambient temperatures run 95–105°F for months at a time, the margin between "running fine" and "overheating under load" narrows considerably on a modified truck.

Cooling system work isn't the most exciting part of a diesel build. It's also not optional at elevated power levels. Compound turbo builds that generate more heat require the cooling system to be sized for that heat load. The tune recalibrated after cooling system work accounts for the improved thermal baseline — a cooler engine runs a more aggressive calibration safely.

We assess the cooling system at the build consultation and flag what needs to change before the build is complete. The EGR cooler condition on 6.4 Power Stroke and some LML Duramax trucks is always on the assessment list — that failure is preventable and expensive when it's not.

Not every build needs every cooling upgrade. The build consultation determines what the current cooling system can support and what needs to change before the power level goes up. Exhaust work paired with cooling upgrades is a natural combination on high-output builds — both affect EGT and thermal management.

First Priority on High-Power Builds
RADIATOR UPGRADE

Upgraded aluminum radiators with increased core thickness and row count handle the elevated heat load of compound turbo builds. The factory radiator on most diesel trucks is adequate for stock power — at compound turbo output, particularly under Texas summer towing conditions, it becomes a thermal limit. 3-row aluminum replacements are the standard upgrade on high-output diesel builds.

Transmission Fluid Temperature
OIL COOLER

Transmission and engine oil cooling are separate concerns on diesel trucks. The transmission cooler — integrated or external — keeps ATF or Allison fluid in the operating range under sustained towing. An external transmission cooler is commonly added on high-torque Cummins and Duramax builds that pull heavy loads regularly. Engine oil temperature management at elevated power levels benefits from oil cooler inspection and potential upgrade on high-mileage or high-power trucks.

EGR COOLER SERVICE

The EGR cooler on the 6.4 Power Stroke and LML Duramax is a documented failure point. Coolant passages within the EGR cooler degrade over time — when they fail, coolant enters the intake system. The damage this causes is expensive and often engine-ending. On any 6.4 Power Stroke or LML Duramax build, EGR cooler condition is assessed before other performance work. Replacement is always a build-plan consideration on these platforms.

CUMMINS COOLING

The 6.7 Cummins has a robust factory cooling system that handles moderate performance work well. At compound turbo power levels and under sustained Texas summer towing, a radiator upgrade becomes relevant. Coolant filtration with a DCA (Diesel Coolant Additive) filter is standard maintenance on high-mileage Cummins engines — liner pitting from cavitation erosion is the failure mode being prevented. DURAMAX COOLING

The LBZ Duramax has a clean cooling architecture without the EGR cooler concerns of later generations. The LML Duramax carries the EGR cooler failure risk — assessed on every LML build we plan. L5P cooling is improved from the factory and holds up better at moderate power levels. High-power L5P builds benefit from radiator upgrades under sustained load. POWER STROKE COOLING

The 6.4 Power Stroke EGR cooler failure is the highest-priority cooling concern in the Power Stroke lineup — coolant contamination in the intake is a known, preventable failure. On 6.7 Power Stroke builds, the cooling system is more robust but radiator upgrades are still relevant on compound turbo builds. EGR cooler assessment is part of any 6.4 build plan without exception.

What diesel truck owners ask about cooling system upgrades.

Do I need a radiator upgrade if I'm only doing a Stage 1 tune?+
Probably not for Stage 1 alone. The factory radiator on most diesel trucks handles Stage 1 tune heat load adequately. Where a radiator upgrade becomes necessary is when the power level goes up significantly — compound turbo builds, Stage 3 tunes, or trucks that tow heavy loads in sustained high-ambient-temperature conditions. We assess cooling system adequacy at the consultation relative to your power target.
What is DCA coolant additive and why does it matter on the Cummins?+
DCA is a Diesel Coolant Additive that maintains the corrosion inhibitor package in the coolant. On wet-sleeve Cummins engines (5.9 and early 6.7), cavitation erosion of the cylinder liner is a real failure mode when DCA concentration is low. The solution is a DCA4 filter in the coolant circuit and periodic DCA concentration testing. It's maintenance, not a performance upgrade — but it prevents a failure that other work won't catch.
How do I know if my 6.4 Power Stroke EGR cooler is failing?+
White exhaust smoke, coolant loss without visible leaks, coolant contamination in the intake tract, and overheating under load are signs that the EGR cooler has failed or is failing on the 6.4. The problem is that by the time symptoms are obvious, coolant has already been entering the intake — and the damage to the intake manifold and engine can be significant. We recommend proactive assessment on any 6.4 with high mileage before other performance work goes on the truck.
Does the cooling system upgrade require a tune change?+
A radiator or oil cooler upgrade alone doesn't require a tune revision the way an exhaust or intercooler upgrade does. However, if the cooling work is part of a broader build sequence that also includes a turbo or tune change, the complete tune revision happens after all hardware is installed. We don't write the tune in the middle of a build that isn't finished.
