HD diesel trucks — Ram 2500/3500, F-250/F-350, Silverado 2500/Sierra 2500 — have different requirements at the wheel and tire level than light-duty trucks or passenger vehicles. Gross vehicle weight ratings over 10,000 lbs demand tire load ratings that match. Running a D-range or light-load tire on a truck that hauls payload or tows a gooseneck is not just a performance problem — it's a safety problem.
On the fitment side, bolt pattern and back-spacing on HD diesels vary by platform and year. The Ram 2500 runs an 8x6.5" bolt pattern. The Super Duty runs 8x170mm. The GM HD platform runs 8x180mm. These are not interchangeable. Wheel selection has to start with the correct bolt pattern for the platform, then hub-centric bore size, then back-spacing that gives the right track width for the lift height and tire size.
And then there's the re-gear question. Any significant tire size increase — typically anything above 35" on a stock-geared HD diesel — warrants a re-gear to correct the axle ratio for the new tire diameter. Without it, the truck tows harder than it should for the same engine output, and fuel economy drops. We call this out at the consultation before the tires are ordered.
Load Range E tires carry a minimum ply rating of 10 and a load index appropriate for the GVWR of HD diesel trucks. D-range tires are undersized for the vehicle weight and should not be used for towing or loaded operation on a Ram 2500, F-350, or Silverado 2500. This is not a preference — it's a load engineering requirement. We will not fit D-range tires on a loaded HD diesel.

Back-spacing varies by wheel brand and lift height. Hub-centric bore must match platform. Adapter-based fitment is not spec'd on HD diesel builds — hub-centric wheel selection only. All fitment confirmed before order.
A wheel and tire install on an HD diesel isn't a rack-and-swap job. The lift height determines max tire clearance — if the lift isn't already done, we're planning it at the same consultation so the tire size target is achievable without rubbing on full lock.
Alignment is mandatory after every wheel and tire install on an HD diesel. The caster, camber, and toe settings that come from the factory are set for the factory tire diameter and suspension geometry. Anything different requires an alignment to prevent premature wear and maintain towing stability. We don't release a truck from the shop after a tire install without a confirmed post-install alignment.
If the tire size increase crosses the re-gear threshold, we sequence the axle ratio correction into the same appointment or flag it for the immediate follow-up. The tire size and gear ratio go together — we don't let one get ahead of the other.
