DIESEL TOWING
PERFORMANCE
HOUSTON

A towing package for a diesel truck is not just a tow tune. It's EGT management, transmission protection, fuel system headroom, and drivetrain assessment — all planned together at one consultation. We build it as a system because that's how it fails if you don't.

Why Towing Performance Is a System, Not a Tune

A Tow Tune Alone
Is Not a
Towing Package.

The most common mistake we see on trucks bought for towing: a single-switch tow tune that adds fuel and boost under load with no consideration for where the EGTs go, what the transmission is doing with the additional torque, or whether the fuel system can maintain injection pressure during a sustained climb at high load.

A tow tune from EFI Live tow calibration is the right foundation — it controls fueling more precisely under load, improves throttle response for trailer stability maneuvers, and optimizes torque delivery in the tow operating range. But that tune generates more heat and more drivetrain stress than the stock calibration. The transmission is the first component stressed under tow load — torque converter lock-up, clutch pack temperature, and fluid life all decline faster under a modified tune without a transmission that's been spec'd for it.

EGT (exhaust gas temperature) monitoring is mandatory on any modified diesel being used for hard towing. The stock EGT display on most HD diesels is either absent or positioned where it's easy to ignore. We install dedicated EGT monitoring — typically an Edge Insight or Pyrometer gauge stack — before a modified tune goes in. The 1,400°F limit under sustained tow load is the number. Above that, turbine wheel and exhaust valve life degrade fast.

Stage by Stage —
Built for the Load.

Towing packages are scoped to the load and the truck's current state. Light towing on a stock truck needs a different build path than a fifth-wheel hauler doing 30,000 lb loads on Texas highways. We start with what the truck actually tows and build from there.

Daily Tow · Light to Medium Load
TOW READY

The foundation package for trucks that tow regularly but at light to moderate loads (10,000–20,000 lbs). Tow tune, EGT monitoring, and transmission fluid service. Addresses the most common failure modes on a stock diesel under tow use: overheated transmission fluid and unmonitored EGTs.

  • EFI Live tow calibration — 1–2 power levels
  • EGT gauge / pyrometer install
  • Transmission fluid service + filter
  • Fuel system inspection and fluid change
  • Pre-tow drivetrain assessment
Max Load · Commercial / Competition
TOW MAX

Maximum-load commercial towing, heavy equipment hauling, or trucks that tow at or near rated capacity in high-ambient Texas summer conditions. This builds on Tow Built with intercooler upgrade for charge air temp management under sustained load, full transmission rebuild to Stage 2, and re-gear for towing efficiency at the target tire size. Cooling system assessment and radiator upgrade if indicated.

  • EFI Live high-output tow calibration
  • Intercooler upgrade — charge air management
  • Full transmission Stage 2 build
  • Differential re-gear — 4.10 or 4.56
  • Cooling system assessment
  • Full EGT / boost / trans-temp monitoring
EGT Management — The Number That Matters Most

1,400°F Is the
Hard Limit.
Plan Around It.

Exhaust gas temperature is the single most important data point on a modified diesel being used for towing. EGT tracks directly with the fuel load being introduced relative to airflow — which means it rises fast under sustained hill climb or headwind at highway speed with a heavy trailer behind.

The stock EGT threshold on most HD diesels with emissions equipment is managed by the ECM through active regen and fuel cut strategies. A modified tune changes those strategies. That's why the monitoring comes before the tune — and why the exhaust upgrade matters. A 4" exhaust system gives the EGT somewhere to go faster.

Common Questions

Diesel Towing Performance FAQ

Straight answers on diesel towing builds and EGT management.

Is a tow tune safe on a stock diesel?+
A properly calibrated tow tune from EFI Live is safe on a mechanically healthy diesel — it adds fuel more precisely under load than the stock calibration and often reduces the "hunting" behavior stock transmissions exhibit on grades. What makes it unsafe is installing a tune without EGT monitoring, on a truck with a worn fuel system that can't maintain injection pressure under load, or on a transmission that's already overdue for service. We assess the full drivetrain before the tune goes in.
What does a tow tune actually change in the ECM?+
A tow calibration in EFI Live modifies fueling tables for the tow operating range (typically 1,600–2,200 RPM under load), torque management parameters that govern how the transmission receives power, throttle response curves for smoother trailer control, and in some cases transmission line pressure tables to firm up shifts under load. It's written against the dyno output and the truck's specific fueling data — not a generic file loaded over OBD.
Do I need an exhaust upgrade before a tow tune?+
On a stock diesel with a tow tune at moderate power levels, the stock exhaust is functional — EGTs are the concern, not back-pressure at stock tune levels. At higher power levels or on builds that will see sustained heavy-grade towing, a 4" exhaust upgrade before or concurrent with the tow tune is recommended. It lowers EGT ceiling on sustained pulls by 100–150°F in most cases, which meaningfully changes how much margin you have before backing off.
Why does the transmission matter so much on a tow build?+
The transmission carries all engine torque to the drivetrain — and under tow load, it does that while also managing torque converter lockup, gear selection, and heat dissipation. A 68RFE, 6R140, or Allison 1000 with worn clutch packs and fluid that hasn't been serviced will overheat faster under a modified tow tune. At minimum, fresh fluid and a filter service. On trucks with high mileage or documented transmission hesitation, we assess the internal condition before the tune goes in.
How much does a towing package improve fuel economy while towing?+
A properly calibrated tow tune typically improves fuel economy while towing by 1–3 MPG compared to the stock calibration under the same load and route. The stock tune is conservative in ways that cost efficiency — it pulls timing and fuel at load conditions where a custom calibration can maintain better combustion efficiency. A re-gear to match the tire size also recovers economy that's lost when oversized tires have the engine operating below its efficiency RPM at highway speed.
