A High-Torque Tune
Is Hard on More
Than the Engine.

A Stage 2 or Stage 3 diesel tune can put 900–1,100 lb-ft of torque through a drivetrain that was engineered for 650–750 lb-ft in the factory configuration. The ring-and-pinion, carrier bearings, and limited-slip clutch packs in stock differentials tolerate that for a while — and then they don't. We've seen trucks come in with more than one failed rear end that traced directly to an engine build that outpaced the axle setup.

The differential upgrade conversation belongs at the same consultation as transmission work. The drivetrain is a system. The engine, the transmission, and the rear end are each rated for a torque ceiling — and the weakest link decides what breaks first. We plan it together.

If you've also done lift work that exposes stock CV and axle limits or installed larger tires that put additional stress on stock differentials, the re-gear and axle assessment becomes more urgent — both conditions change the load and angle the axle shaft is operating at.

Each diesel platform ships with a different rear axle configuration. Understanding which axle is under the truck — and what its torque ceiling is — determines how the axle upgrade plan is written.

Ram 2500 / Ram 3500
CUMMINS
Dana 60 (front) · Dana 70 / AAM 11.5 (rear)

The Ram platform runs a Dana 60 front and either a Dana 70 or AAM 11.5 in the rear depending on year and cab/bed configuration. The AAM 11.5 (also called the 14-bolt equivalent for Ram) is the stronger unit and handles high-torque builds better than the Dana 70. High-fueling builds with aggressive tune files and towing use expose ring-and-pinion wear faster on Dana 70-equipped trucks. Full Cummins Ram build overview.

  • Dana 70: common on older Ram builds — bearings + R&P are upgrade targets at Stage 2+
  • AAM 11.5: stronger — gear upgrade still warranted at larger tire sizes

F-250 / F-350 Super Duty
POWER STROKE

The Super Duty runs a Dana 60 front axle and a Sterling 10.25 or 10.5 in the rear. The Sterling 10.5 is found on F-350 DRW (dually) trucks and is the stronger unit. High-torque 6.7 Power Stroke builds on the Sterling 10.25 benefit from upgraded ring-and-pinion and a carrier bearing refresh at Stage 2+. Silverado 2500 / Sierra 2500
DURAMAX
AAM 9.25 (front) · AAM 11.5 / 14-Bolt (rear)

The GM HD platform uses an AAM 9.25 independent front suspension (IFS) setup and an AAM 11.5 or the classic GM 14-bolt full-float rear axle. The 14-bolt rear is famously strong — it's one of the better stock axles in the light-HD diesel segment — but bearing wear and limited-slip clutch pack degradation still occur at sustained high-torque output on the Allison-backed L5P builds.

  • AAM 11.5: gear re-ratio at 37"+ tire sizes on lifted trucks

Not every truck needs the same axle work. The power target, tire size, and towing use case determine which tier is appropriate. All axle work is scoped at the same consultation as engine and transmission work — before anything is ordered.

If you've gone to larger tires — anything above 35" on a stock gear ratio — the re-gear should happen regardless of power level. The stock 3.73 or 3.42 gearing on most HD diesel trucks was calibrated for factory tire diameter. A 37" tire on 3.42 gearing drops effective engine RPM at highway speed to a range that costs fuel economy and increases the load on the transmission torque converter.

BEARING & SEAL SERVICE
Stage 1 Builds · Inspection-Triggered · Pre-Tune Baseline

Carrier bearing replacement, pinion bearing replacement, axle seal refresh. This is the foundation service — done before a high-power tune on a truck with unknown maintenance history, or when wear is identified during lift or tire work. Differential fluid service and gear-mesh inspection included. Limited-slip clutch pack inspection and friction modifier change if equipped.

RING-AND-PINION RE-GEAR

Ring-and-pinion swap to correct the gear ratio for tire size or towing use. Typical target ratios for 35"–37" tire builds: 4.10 or 4.56. Done front and rear simultaneously so the transfer case sees consistent ratios in 4WD. Includes full carrier setup, bearing replacement, and MLSS (Multi-Link Suspension System) alignment check on IFS platforms. Combined with Stage 2+ tune revision after install.

LOCKER INSTALLATION

Mechanical or pneumatic locker installation (ARB Air Locker, Eaton E-Locker, Auburn ECTED) for trucks that require positive traction engagement. Sled pull prep trucks and off-road use cases benefit most here. Lockers are spec'd to the platform and use case — not all locker types fit all differentials or use patterns. Air locker installations require onboard air routing — we manage the full install.

Does a Stage 2 diesel tune damage the stock rear axle?+
It depends on the axle and how hard the truck is driven. A stock Dana 70 or Sterling 10.25 can survive Stage 2 power levels under normal driving — but sustained hard acceleration, aggressive towing, or sled pull loads accelerate ring-and-pinion and carrier bearing wear significantly. We assess the axle condition at the build consultation and flag it if it needs service before the tune goes in.
What gear ratio should I run with 35" or 37" tires?+
Most HD diesel trucks come with 3.42 or 3.73 gearing — both were calibrated for factory tire diameter (typically 31"–33" on stock trucks). A 35" tire benefits from a re-gear to 4.10; a 37" tire generally calls for 4.56. The right target depends on how the truck is used — highway towing favors different ratios than work-site low-speed use. We spec the gear ratio at consultation based on tire size and use case.
How do I know if my differential needs work before a tune?+
Signs of differential wear include gear whine under load, vibration during deceleration, rough engagement from the limited-slip, or gear fluid that comes out gray or metallic at service. If the truck has over 100k miles and no documented differential service, we inspect it before the tune goes in. Putting a high-torque tune on a worn ring-and-pinion shortens its remaining life significantly.
Is the GM 14-bolt rear axle as strong as people say?+
Yes — the GM 14-bolt full-float is one of the stronger OEM axle housings in the light-HD segment. It tolerates high-torque Duramax builds better than many comparable axles. That said, sustained high-power output and tire size changes still wear the ring-and-pinion and carrier bearings over time. It's a strong foundation for performance work, not an unlimited one. We still assess it at the build consultation on high-power L5P builds.
Do I need to re-gear front and rear at the same time?+
Yes, if the truck has 4WD. Running mismatched gear ratios front and rear in a 4WD system creates transfer case binding and accelerates wear on both differentials and the transfer case. Re-gearing is a front-and-rear operation on any 4WD diesel truck. On a 2WD truck (rear-wheel-drive only), only the rear axle needs the ratio change.
